Oak Orchard Harbor

Oak Orchard Harbor
An alluring and tranquil port on Lake Ontario

The harbor lies at the coastal hamlet of Point Breeze on the mouth of the Oak Orchard River.
Long ago, Point Breeze and the surrounding area along the Oak Orchard was a Native Americajn settlement, known ominously as “the Black North” for the dense forest which made passage in daylight as dark as night.

As the river uncoils toward Lake Ontario, its lower five- mile reach has carved 50-foot deep meanders in the Queenston shale, with purple and green walls topped by a hardwood forest. Much of the river is undisturbed as a state-protected fish and wildlife habitat area, except for the hamlet of The Bridges, a quaint New England style fishing village, two miles upriver from Point Breeze.

Today, the harbor is a gateway to the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, designated one of America’s Byways, hugging the Lake Ontario coastline. The area boasts public parks and a full-service port, where you can watch the sun melt into Lake Ontario, listen to the sullen roar of breaking waves, fish for colossal trout and salmon, browse a marina chandlery, or dine leisurely on the waterfront.
