Medina Falls & Aqueduct

About

In Medina, the Erie Canal crosses the Oak Orchard River via a historic stone aqueduct, creating a rare and striking sight. Built in 1849 from locally quarried Medina sandstone, the aqueduct carries canal boats over the river, allowing visitors to look down from the towpath and see fishing boats floating on the water below. Just downstream, visitors can also enjoy Medina Falls, a scenic waterfall where the Oak Orchard River cascades over a series of sandstone ledges, adding to the natural beauty of the area.

This remarkable aqueduct is one of only a few remaining of its kind in New York State, reflecting the engineering skill of the 19th century. It’s part of Medina’s rich canal heritage, which helped the village become a center for Medina sandstone quarrying and transportation in the 1800s. Today, the aqueduct and Medina Falls attract boaters, anglers and tourists exploring the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The area offers opportunities for fishing, photography and leisurely walks along the canal’s towpath and nearby trails.

Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a unique outdoor experience, Medina’s Erie Canal aqueduct and Medina Falls provide a captivating glimpse into the past alongside natural scenic beauty.
