The Shoe Tree

About

The Shoe Tree on Foss Road in Lyndonville, NY, is a quirky roadside attraction adorned with hundreds of shoes. While its exact origins are unclear, the tradition reportedly took off in 1986 when Earl Baun threw several pairs of shoes into the trees while cleaning out his girlfriend’s closet.

According to local legend, tying your shoelaces together, making a wish, and successfully tossing the shoes onto a branch may make your wish come true. Over time, the Shoe Tree has gained regional and even national attention, earning mentions on various websites and in the 2008 book New York Curiosities.

Three of the original ash trees still stand, though they've been heavily trimmed due to damage from the emerald ash borer and severe wind storms. In recent years, two smaller Shoe Trees were added to the site, helping to keep this unique tradition alive for future generations.
