The Town of Carlton was formed from the Towns of Gaines The Town of Kendall was named in honor of Amos Kendall,
and Ridgeway on April 13, 1822 and known under the name the United States Postmaster General at the time the Township
of Oak Orchard until 1825 when the name was changed to was formed. On April 7, 1837, about half of the Town of Murray
Carlton. It is thought the name Carlton was chosen honoring became the new Town of Kendall. Settlements were not built as

In December 1916, the original Oak Orchard Lighthouse was swept
away in a storm. In 2010, a grassroots effort enabled construction of
a square pyramidal replica of the Oak Orchard Lighthouse in Point
Breeze on the east side of the Oak Orchard River, housing local maritime
historical artifacts and a gift shop. Open F-SU, May - September.
