Bicentennial Quilt

by Lynne Menz

To commemorate Orleans County's Bicentennial, a 70" square Bicentennial Quilt was created and unveiled at the April 15th Bicentennial Ceremony. It is expected to be on display at several sites in the county throughout the year. Historian Catherine Cooper was consulted on the design, along with a group of quilters at Town & Country Quilt Shop in Albion.

Those who participated in the creation included Tara Thom of Gaines and owner of the quilt shop, Kathryn DeMarco of Kendall, Sue Landis of Barre, Carrie Standish of Albion, Brenda Radzinski of Gaines, Gayle Ashbery of Carlton, and Catherine Hooker of Middleport, who is a Medina native.

The design consists of blocks featuring the 10 towns that make up Orleans County, the dates 1825–2025, and the words "Faith, Family & Farming," which highlight three enduring cornerstones of the community. Catherine Hooker said they wanted a quilt that looked like one from 1825, with some modern elements. The design resembled one from 200 years ago, but they used machine embroidery for the town names and the years they were established.

The different blocks were connected with star patterns. The quilters used appliqué for the Orleans County name and the years 1825 to 2025.
