1. Fall Foliage Train Ride | Medina Railroad Museum
Fall is the perfect season to visit the Medina Railroad Museum and enjoy a leisurely, old-fashioned way to experience the beauty of autumn in western New York. Enjoy a two-hour round-trip train ride through the wooded scenery and along the Erie Canal. As the leaves transform into brilliant hues of reds, oranges, and gold, you won't miss a beat as you pair your trip in our vintage cars with the magnificent sights of the season. 2. Apple Picking
Did you know New York is the second-largest apple-producing state in the country? Thanks to its rich soil and ideal climate, apples grow especially well here. Orleans County, located in western New York, is one of the top three apple-producing counties in the state. The area is known for its wide variety of apples, from crisp and tart to sweet and juicy.
Among the many orchards in the region, Hurd Orchards in Holley, NY offers a truly charming and memorable apple-picking experience. During September and October, their Apple Barn is open daily from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for “Apple Pie in Our Barn!” Visitors can enjoy a la carte slices of fresh Apple and Apple Raspberry Pie, savory Chicken Pot Pie, warm mulled Apple Cider, and more. It’s a celebration of the harvest season—full of cozy flavors and classic fall atmosphere.
Roberts Farm Market in Medina is another great spot for apple picking, offering more than 20 different varieties in their u-pick orchards. In addition to apples, you’ll find a pumpkin patch perfect for fall fun and jugs of their homemade sweet apple cider, a local favorite since 1974.
3. Fun on the Farm
Spend a fun-filled fall day at Partyka Farms in Kendall, NY. On Saturdays and Sundays throughout October, you can hop on a hayride to their pumpkin patch and pick out the perfect pumpkin. Their Ice Cream Bar stays open through mid-October, so you can enjoy a sweet treat before the season ends. Starting in September, their old-fashioned apple cider is available in the gift shop, which is also stocked with seasonal décor and thoughtful gifts.
Don't miss the Farm Store, where you’ll find fresh-baked goods, local jams and jellies, honey, pantry mixes, and more. Partyka Farms is also the starting point for the Country Barn Quilt Trail. Pick up a map and directory to begin exploring the colorful barn quilts scattered across Orleans County.
4. Craft Beverage Tasting
Celebrate the flavors of fall in Orleans County with a weekend full of local charm and seasonal sips. On Saturday, September 27, 2025, head to Medina for “Ale in Autumn,” an event hosted by the Medina Area Partnership. As you stroll through the picturesque downtown, you’ll get to sample craft ales from local breweries, all while exploring the town’s unique shops and businesses.
For wine lovers, make a stop at Schwenk Wine Cellars in Kent, where tradition runs deep. The family has been growing grapes in Orleans County since 1970 and crafting award-winning wines since 1983, using recipes passed down from their great-grandfather, a winemaker from Germany. It’s the perfect way to toast to the season.
5. Take in the Foliage
Orleans County showcases some of the most vibrant fall foliage in Western New York, offering unforgettable views at every turn.
For a stunning panoramic view, head to Mount Albion Cemetery. This historic site spans 100 acres of rolling hills and winding paths and is the final resting place for more than 30,000 individuals. At the center stands the Soldiers & Sailors Monument Tower, a tribute to over 400 Orleans County residents who died during the Civil War. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the tower rewards those who climb its 84 steps with sweeping views of the colorful fall landscape.
Nature lovers will also enjoy a visit to Holley Falls. Holley Falls Park features a peaceful setting complete with a picnic pavilion, a picturesque footbridge, and walking trails that connect to nearby Holley Canal Park. Operated by the Village of Holley, the canal park is a favorite stop for boaters and cyclists traveling the Erie Canal. Visitors can explore the boardwalk, gazebo, playground, and nature trails that lead to the falls and the village’s historic Public Square.
Another great spot to enjoy fall’s natural beauty is the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. Spanning more than 10,000 acres of wooded swamps, marshes, and open meadows, the refuge becomes a key resting point for thousands of migrating birds, including around 80,000 Canada geese. A pair of nesting bald eagles can be viewed via live camera feed at the Visitor Contact Station. The refuge also offers hiking trails, canoeing, photography opportunities, and seasonal activities like fishing, hunting, and cross-country skiing, all available with a permit.

6. Hauntings of Orleans County

The Pratt Event Center in Albion, NY consists of three adjoining buildings, all of which have been connected at different times in their history. Spend the night or several at The Hart House Hotel in Medina, NY. Of all the buildings in Medina, the Hart likely had more souls tread over its threshold than any other building in town. With a long, storied past, original floors, and intact historic windows, it's no surprise that this building is haunted. People have reported hearing names called aloud when no one is around but the spirit seen most often is a woman in a long, flowing dress with shoulder-length brown hair that stands at the top of the first staircase and greets visitors unexpectedly.

On Saturday, October 4th, 2025, don’t miss the Kendall Community Scarecrow Festival at Kendall Community Park. This year’s scarecrow contest theme is “Spooky, Scary, and a Little Creepy.” Enjoy food, games, entertainment, and plenty of free fall activities the whole family will love.
That same day, the Albion Fall Fest will be taking place. Hosted by the Albion Merchants Association, the festival features live music, vendors, delicious food, and fun kids’ activities like pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, games, and crafts.
Later in the month, on Saturday, October 25th, Holley Village Square hosts the annual Fall “Hallow” Fest. The event includes a festive parade, live music, food vendors, and more to get everyone in the autumn spirit.

The Canal Village Farmer’s Market in Medina runs every Saturday until October, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering everything from fresh produce to food trucks. Meanwhile, the Albion Farmers Market takes place every Sunday until October, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Save-A-Lot parking lot, with a great selection of produce, sweet treats, florals and more.
