Orleans County, N.Y. Day Trip Series: A Visit to the Village of Albion

by Isabella Zasa

Orleans County offers plenty of memorable destinations that are easy to visit in a single day. Located approximately an hour's drive between Niagara Falls USA and Rochester, the county blends Great Lakes adventure with historic canal-town charm. Our new Day Trip Series will guide you community by community, highlighting attractions, heritage sites, dining, shopping and outdoor recreation that make each stop worth the trip. Today, we're headed to the Village of Albion.

Albion serves as the county seat of Orleans County and stands out as one of Western New York’s most unique small-town destinations. It is known for its 34 architecturally significant structures surrounding Courthouse Square, anchored by the 1858 Greek Revival-style domed county courthouse.

Albion’s uniqueness extends beyond architecture. It is also home to Waterman Park, where visitors can see a bronze statue of Charles W. Howard, founder of the world’s first Santa Claus School in 1937. Just minutes away, Mount Albion Cemetery offers sweeping views of the county and one of Western New York’s most significant Civil War memorials, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

Together, these landmarks highlight Albion’s blend of history, character and small-town charm, making it a standout stop in Orleans County’s Day Trip Series.

Stroll along Albion’s Erie Canal corridor and discover stories from the village’s past. At Erie Canal Park, you'll find a monument commemorating the 1859 Erie Canal Bridge Collapse, one of the community’s most tragic events. On Sept. 28, 1859, hundreds gathered on a Main Street bridge to watch a wire walker perform during the Orleans County Fair. The bridge collapsed into the canal, claiming 15 lives

Then make your way to Waterman Park, which honors Albion’s unique place in Christmas history. The park celebrates Albion’s unique connection to Christmas history and is home to a bronze statue of Charles W. Howard, who founded the world’s first Santa Claus School in Albion in 1937. Be sure to snap a photo with Santa before continuing your day of exploration.

Local History Lesson: Albion's Canal Park features a monument honoring the victims of the 1859 bridge collapse, which killed 15 people on September 28. A crowd of 250 people, along with five horses, had gathered to watch a wirewalker perform on a tightrope over the canal when the wooden bridge collapsed.

Mount Albion Cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the most remarkable historic sites in Orleans County. Known for its stunning Medina sandstone architecture and peaceful grounds, it is both a place of remembrance and a favorite spot for scenic walks.

The arched sandstone entrance, completed in 1880, sets the tone for what is inside, including a chapel from 1875 and thousands of intricately carved headstones.

Its centerpiece is the 68-foot Soldiers and Sailors Monument, dedicated in 1876 to honor the nearly 500 Orleans County soldiers who died in the Civil War. Climb its 84 steps for panoramic views and a quiet moment at the top.
