Church in the Middle of the Street

About

One of the village’s most unique landmarks: St. John’s Episcopal Church, famously known as the “Church in the Middle of the Street.”

Located at the intersection of Church Street and East Center Street (Route 31), St. John’s stands in the middle of the roadway. Built in 1832, it is believed to be the only church in the world situated in such a position.

The church was constructed of Medina sandstone, quarried from the banks of the Erie Canal. It is the oldest building made of sandstone in Medina. In 2014, the Medina Village Board designated it as a local landmark to preserve its historic exterior for future generations. The following year, St. John’s was inducted into the Medina Sandstone Hall of Fame.

The church has earned national recognition, including a feature in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, making it one of two Medina landmarks to receive such an honor. The other is the Medina Culvert, the only place along the Erie Canal where a roadway passes underneath the canal through a tunnel, rather than crossing over it by bridge.
